Dell Inspiron I15RV-477BLK (I15RV-477B) Inexpensive Laptop for $280 (Specs Review)

Dell Inspiron I15RV-477BLK - I15RV-477B

The Dell Inspiron I15RV-477BLK, also listed as I15RV-477B in some laptop sections on retail websites, is among the cheapest 15.6-inch laptops on the market with its price of $280 and one of the thinnest in the inexpensive category.

Ingredients hidden inside the unobtrusive matte-texuterd 1-inch thin chassis are the budget-class Intel Celeron 1007U dual-core 1.5GHz processor, offering beefier speed than the AMD E1-series found in the sub $300 notebooks, 4GB of system memory for worry free multitasking and overall work, and a 320GB hard drive which is a bare minimum in modern notebooks.

Intel Celeron 1007U Benchmark by PassMark

These PassMark benchmark results mean the 1007U is adequate for the pre-installed Windows 8 OS and basic productivity like word processing and spreadsheet editing or web surfing. The notebook supports 1080p video playback on hardware level and has an HDMI video connector, so it is a good recommendation for multimedia-oriented users on a tight budget.

Display management on the laptop providing 1366×768 resolution relies on the Intel HD integrated graphics processor, which is not intended for 3D gaming.

Dell has also sqeezed in a DVD burner in the I15RV-477BLK / I15RV-477B. Considering that, the notebook’s weight of around 5 pounds is quite light, because other similar notebooks are usually around 5.5 pounds.

Since specifications for this model haven’t been completely disclosed, we don’t know which battery it has, nor estimated power autonomy. The I15RV series comes equipped either with a 4-cell 40WHr or 6-cell 65WHr battery. Judging from the low price tag, we strongly assume it’s the 4-cell one. The good thing energy efficiency-wise is that the CPU belongs to Intel’s ultra-low voltage lineup and has a power consumption of 17W, down from usual 35W of common standard-voltage CPUs.

Let’s quickly list other features that might be of interest for potential buyers. Dell’s I15RV-477BLK / I15RV-477B has stereo speakers built-in, a 1MP web camera embedded into the LCD bezel, for USBs (with higher 3.0 speed on two of them), already mentioned HDMI, and a memory card reader. The good old VGA video output has been omitted, so you won’t be able to hook-up the system to a VGA monitor.

Overall, this laptop model hasn’t been put together with luxury looks and high performance in mind. Wea are free to say it’s rather a bargain offering better experience than other laptops at the same price point, with exception of battery life because we don’t know how long it lasts.

  • can i play simple 3d games like minecraft and team fortress 2?
can i do skype voice and video chats without any quality problems?
is it good enough to record gameplays?

    1. For gaming on a tight budget, the AMD A6-4400M and A8-4500M are the best value CPUs and you should avoid Celerons and Pentiums (you’ll probably be able to run Minecraft and TF2 but a very sluggish frame rates and with low settings). You can get the Toshiba C855D-S5109 ( with the A6 for $350, A8 laptops are a bit more expensive. As for chats, all modern laptops are capable of that. You don’t want a 0.3MP cam inside your laptop, but a 1MP like in this model will work fine. The Celeron is not good for gaming, let alone gaming + recording.

    2. My 2009 released Atom N450 netbook with 1 GB RAM runs Minecraft pretty good on low settings. This laptop with Celeron 1007U, a processor released in Q1 2013, should easily be able to play Minecraft.
