Here’s one of the cheapest thin-and-light 14-inch laptops with a touchscreen display on the US market. It’s the HP Envy Sleekbook TouchSmart 4-1105dx, selling for only $500.
The price of the HP 4-1105dx isn’t among the lowest in the laptop arena, but we’re talking here about an ultrabook-like touch-enabled machine with a slim profile, a decent Intel Core i3 processor, a solid state drive helping the traditional HDD storage run faster, and keyboard backlight. Sure, there are similar thin-and-light touch laptops on the market even for below $500, such as the 450-dollar Lenovo S400 Touch – 59371475, but they’re not so well equipped as the 4-1105dx.
HP’s 4-1105dx model from the aluminum-cladded Envy 4 series with its Intel Core i3-3217U dual core 1.8GHz processor is not a speed demon, but is capable of accomplishing daily home and office tasks effortlessly. With its Passmark CPU benchmark score of 2,284 points, the chip is far slower than the similar full voltage Intel Core i3-3120M with 3,285 points, designed for use in the full-size full-thickness laptops. Regarding thin-and-light laptop and ultrabook-use processors, it’s slower than the ultra-low voltage Intel Core i5-3337U with a score of 3,236. On the other side, the i3-3217U is faster than the Intel Pentium 2117U scoring 1,810, not to mention the Celeron 1007U with 1,428 points. As a downside, the utilized i3 part belongs to last year’s “Ivy Bridge” 3rd Generation Core family, whereas newer 4th Gen i3 “Haswell” chips with better power efficiency, cooler operation, and better integrated graphics are yet to come to the market. Speaking of graphics processing, the 4-1105dx relies on the ordinary Intel HD 4000 integrated GPU, incapable of serious 3D gaming. For 1080p full HD video playback, the HD 4000 perfectly fine though. However, the screen is roughly 720p (1366×768) so it can’t display 1080p content in full resolution.
The RAM amount of 4GB is quite usual and satisfactory for 99% of tasks, and the main hard drive capacity of 500GB is also a common one. Thankfully, the traditionally sluggish 5,400rpm laptop HDD is accompanied by a 32GB SSD. With help of Intel Rapid Start and Smart Response technologies, the SSD part speeds up system boot times and responsiveness of Windows 8 and apps.
HP has included a 4-Cell 52WHr 3.55 Ah lithium-ion polymer battery, which is an about average capacity for the notebook category. It should provide up to five hours of operation on a single charge, according to the manufacturer.
For audio, the notebook provides stereo speakers backed by Beats Audio technology for richer sound, while video chats are supported by a 720p web camera. Connections to the outside world include Wi-Fi wireless and wired Ethernet LAN. The laptop is Bluetooth-enabled.
Rounding off specs of the 4-1105dx, lets mention its ports and slots. It has three one 3.0 USB and two 2.0 USBs, HDMI video/audio connector for HDTVs and monitors, a multi-format media card reader, and headphones and mic audio jacks.
Design-wise, the Envy 4 is sleek, elegant, and sturdy, thanks to its simplistic look, a 0.9″ thin profile, and aluminum on the base and lid. The base of the laptop is silver and has a black chicket-style backlit keyboard in the center of it, right above a big buttonless trackpad. The lid is in black color.
Overall, for the price of $500, the HP Envy Sleekbook TouchSmart 4-1105dx delivers a great value for the money, considering all the features and specs listed above. Still, you can compare it to other cheap notebook offers on this page. At the given price, the laptop can be bought at Best Buy.
